A Yamaha to haul your Yamahas and three friends

2017 Yamaha Cross Hub Concept

Yamaha is well known for building fun stuff like motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, outboard engines for boats, and even the occasional musical instrument or two. Now, the Japanese mega-corporation is toying with entering the compact pickup market with this, the Cross Hub Concept. It’s unique in just about every way, from its seating configuration to its cargo bed. Sadly, the project seems a bit too “concept” to make production anytime soon.

The Cross Hub Concept made its debut at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show and is billed as a lifestyle car for those splitting time between city life and the great outdoors. Yamaha says it’s “just the right size” and is designed for on-road and off-road maneuverability while still having room for “other Yamaha recreational products.” So far, this is the furthest Yamaha has gotten [...]

Renault Symbioz concept previewed ahead of Frankfurt motor show

The Symbioz concept will preview the brand’s future autonomous, electric and connected technologies

RenaultRenault Symbioz has previewed its upcoming Symbioz concept, which will be revealed at the Frankfurt motor show later this month.

The concept will demonstrate three future aspects of motoring; autonomy, electric drive and connectivity, which the brand expects to feature on its everyday models by 2030.

The car’s name, Symbioz, suggests a heavy focus upon the Internet of Things phenomenon, in which everyday objects are connected via the internet, and can thus interact with one another. For example, cars which can communicate with household appliances or systems are currently predicted by manufacturers, or the current trend of smartphones which can control elements of the car, such as heating, lighting and unlocking.

Renault has detailed that it has worked with technology companies to implement the latest connectivity tech on the car, but stopped short of  specifying [...]

Could this modern day Isetta be the future of motoring?

An American designer has come up with a vision for a 21st century BMW Isetta.

modern-day-isettaThe Isetta or ‘bubble car’ as it was known, was a very small two-seater with a motorcycle engine that redefined the idea of a small car, so a modern day version could be just the ticket – especially with the upcoming ban on petrol and diesel cars by 2040.

Justin Hyunjung Cho designed a retro version of the ’60s classic that kept to the small proportions of the car, but added an electric motor instead that is ideal for future motoring.

Seeing the Isetta as a car 70 years ahead of its time, Cho decided it was the ideal basis on which to design a modern car.

The drawings show a revolutionary concept whereby the original hinged front end that fully opened, and was in fact the only door on the vehicle, would be replicated with a removable piece of [...]

BMW 6 SeriesThe Frankfurt Motor Show starts next week, just a few days after we get back from the Goodwood Revival. Frankfurt is Germany’s most important automotive event and is a critical time for the home teams – BMW, Volkswagen, Mercedes, Porsche and Audi.

New models and outrageous concept cars are what most people crowd into a European motor show for, but this year’s event will no doubt be relatively subdued – Germany’s biggest carmakers, the lifeblood of the country’s economy, are under scrutiny for their role in the ongoing Dieselgate emissions scandal. What’s more, the world is turning its back on their favourite fuel.

The event for passenger cars takes place in Messe Frankfurt, an exhibition centre with several centuries of history as a trade fair venue, on odd years. Even years see the event move [...]
